Catalonia elected to the ESRA Chair-team
Since the founding of the European Semiconductor Regions Alliance on 7 September 2023, the alliance has been chaired by the Free State of Saxony and co-chaired by the Piedmont region. At an event on 8 November 2024, the chairmanship will be handed over from Saxony to Piedmont as planned, and Saxony will continue to serve as co-chair for one year. To complete the Alliance's leadership structure, consisting of a Chair and two Co-Chairs, the now 31 member regions from 13 countries have elected Catalonia as a further Co-Chair for 2025 and as Chair for 2026.
Michael Kretschmer, Minister President of the Free State of Saxony (Germany) and ESRA Chairman 2023/24: "From the start of ESRA, it has been Saxony’s commitment to unite the European semiconductor region and give them a strong voice. Our endeavour has made very good progress over the past year and a half. I am delighted that we have been able to develop structures and content during this time that have made ESRA visible in Europe and, above all, in the institutions of the European Union. It is a good sign that ESRA's working structures are now being further strengthened and expanded. I am looking forward to working with the new ESRA Chair-team. Saxony will unabatedly continue to contribute its expertise and manpower to ESRA."
Alberto Cirio, President of the Piedmont Region (Italy) and Co-Chairman of ESRA: "For Piedmont Region, assuming the Chairman of the Alliance is not only an honor but also a significant responsibility, which we are committed to fulfill to the best of our abilities. I would like to extend my congratulations to Saxony for the outstanding work accomplished during its presidency, which has played a crucial role in establishing solid foundations for the future of ESRA. Moreover, I would like to express special compliments to Catalonia for its election as Co-chair 2025 and Chair 2026. I firmly believe that by collaborating as a presidency Trio, we will drive innovative initiatives and deliver tangible results for the Alliance. Together, we are committed to achieving ambitious goals."
Miquel Sàmper, Minister of Business and Labour of the Government of Catalonia (Spain): "We are honoured, proud and feel the responsibility to carry out a great job all together for the coming years on behalf and for the ESRA member regions and for the competitiveness of the European semiconductors’ value chain. Our commitment with ESRA and the alignment with the goals of the Alliance is absolute. One of the top shared priorities will be to position ESRA as a key partner of the European bodies in the implementation of the European Chip Act, placing the regions at the very core of the semiconductor industrial policies. Leading this process will allow all of us to enrich the semiconductor ecosystem through interregional cooperation. Since the inception of this significant network of regions, Catalonia is committed and firmly determined to contribute to the European industrial sovereignty in this critical sector."
Background to Catalonia:
Catalonia is one of the most vibrant and highly specialized regions in Europe in the field of semiconductors. In May 2023, the Catalan Semiconductor Alliance was created, gathering the main actors in the knowledge and industrial value chain: more than 50 companies (local and international) and entities are currently active members. Catalonia is a highly knowledge-based, industrialized and a go-to business region and its semiconductor ecosystem accounts for 260 agents including companies, research bodies, universities, and technology centres. The region is a pole of innovation and a magnet for talent and the 4,600 qualified professionals in this field are the main asset of the sector. The Catalan Government has 40 international offices around the world, being the one in Brussels one of the most solid ones and with a longer tradition. It was created more than 35 years ago and has a robust track record in contributing to the European competitiveness in several industrial fields and establishing and nurturing bonds with the European institutions.
